What it is
Johnny Boy's is a Southern Californian diner in Stoke Newington, on the former Thai Cafe site on Northwold Road, from Julian Denis, the founder of Facing Heaven. It opened in July with booths for two and four along the room, a bar and a window counter. The menu is diner comfort food: a patty melt on rye with caramelised onions and Russian dressing, a crab tostada with crab mayo, carrot escabeche and radish, a pastrami sandwich, fried zucchini, a fried chicken dinner and a steak plate, with California burritos of carne asada, fries, cheese and guacamole. When Hot Dinners visited in July, plates ran from £9 to £19. A London Standard guest review in October was critical.
