What it is

Cloth Cornhill is the second restaurant from Joe Haynes, Ben Butterworth and chef Tom Hurst, the team behind Cloth in Farringdon. It occupies the former Simpson's Tavern, a City chophouse founded in 1757 that closed in 2022. The two first-floor dining rooms keep their high-backed mahogany booths and brass coat rails, food comes up by dumbwaiter, and there is a pub on the ground floor. The menu is British and generous: devils on horseback with black pudding and brown sauce (£9), Dorset crab cocktail (£19), grilled lemon sole with potted shrimp and sea beet (£32), venison, bacon and prune pie (£34), a Suffolk pork chop with sauce Robert and a 750g Somerset Barnsley chop. Set lunch runs Monday to Thursday at £24 or £29, and on Fridays steak frites with salad and pudding costs £29. It is open on weekdays.
