What it is
Bunso is a Filipino pizzeria and bakery from Omar Shah and his Maginhawa Group, the people behind Belly, Mamasons and Guanabana. It opened on 13 October in a single-storey Art Deco-style building on Hawley Road, once a hair and beauty academy, with a big shopfront, an open kitchen, counter seats facing the chefs and a hi-fi wall. Pizzas run from a £15 margherita to mushroom adobo with porcini powder (£20), peanut pesto with cherry tomato (£19), laing with crème fraîche and onion (£19), kaldereta with teardrop pepper, goat's cheese and potato (£22) and longanisa sausage with calamansi hot honey and atchara (£23). Around them are dishes such as Cornish bluefin tuna and beetroot kinilaw, crab Bicol Express tortellini and cannelloni with laing and coconut béchamel, with durian and olive oil gelato to finish. The pizzeria runs Tuesday to Sunday evenings, and the official site gave 20 October for the daytime bakery's opening.
